Since the research and development in 1996, Baoshan Burley tobacco has experienced manufacture process for nine years. It was planted respectively in Daojie county, Lujiang, Yangliu, Pupiao, Bingma, Changning of Baoshan with the altitude of 800-1300m, and in Baochang, Renhe, Changshui of Shidian with the altitude of 1450m. With comparison, Burley tobacco adapts to be planted in the areas with altitude of 1200-1450m. According to No. (2000) 620 file of National Tobacco Monopoly Bureau: "The color of high quality burley tobacco is red to tinge red-brown, with brilliant blare, moderate degree, loosen structure and harmonious chemical component less than sugar 1%, nitrogen 2-5%, nicotine 2-4%, volatilized alkali 0.5-0.8%, chlorine hydronium less than 1%", Burley tobacco planted in our zone is red-brown, with brilliant blare, moderate degree and loosen structure. Through testing by Yunnan Tobacco Academe: sugar 0.80-0.88%, deoxidized sugar 0.54-0.69%, nitrogen 3.15-3.93%, nicotine 2.40-3.91%, chlorine hydronium 0.151-0.167%, kalium 4.34-4.65%, proteid 15.36-16.21% and atio of nitrogen and alkali 0.92-0.96.
In December 2000, Yunnan Tobacco Academe organized to inspect Burley tobacco which is from all over the country. They give the impression of Baoshan Burley tobacco is full of aroma, high quality of aroma, moderate chroma, light mixed gas, strong, comfortable aftertaste, with taste of chocolate, no bitterness. After all, Baoshan Burley tobacco gets No. 1.That means Burley in our zone reached the national standard.
"There are four seasons in one mountain, the weathers are different from every ten miles", Baoshan is well-known for its unique climate. The field, which covers 350,000-400,000 mu, can produce 1-1.2 million dan Burley tobacco. At present, we have summed up a series of "Production Standard Technology of High Quality Burley Tobacco in Baoshan". Burley tobacco adapts to be planted in the loosen and fertile soil with thick soil layer. The soil should include the chemical components of 2-3% organic material, more kalium and calcium, moderate phosphor, etc. As the main material of mixed tobacco, the leaf features of Burley tobacco are thin , light, loosen but subtle
structure, strong flexibility, high filling and excellent taste. The quality will be influenced by planting too rarely or too closely. Through experiment, in the same tobacco trees unit area, the output of the wide plant spacing field is more than the narrow plant spacing field. The aroma will be decreased while the planting density is increased. Therefore, reasonable spacing can assure not only high
output but excellent benefit. Burley tobacco needs much fertilizer, absorbing more nitrogen, kalium and calcium, and less phosphor, magnesium and manganese. The period from 48th-73rd day after transplanting is the festigium for dry matter accumulation. Besides, Burley tobacco easily suffered from the planting diseases and pests, such as tobacco bacterial wilt, tobacco wild fire, angular leaf spot of tobacco, common tobacco mosaic virus, cuke tobacco mosaic virus, etc. The mature features of tobacco leaves are centralized, and with rapid change of color from green or yellow to brown. Generally speaking, the tobacco leaves would be picked on 1:00pm, fine day, not picked in rainy day before 10:00am. Methods of picking or cutting can be chose by the actuality.
